I was thinking about the state of the world as I was writing a Christmas letter. My son Peter is 14. He won 3rd place at the NM State Fair for his self portrait this year. The story I like to tell about Peter is that he's a good kid who is just starting to "grow into his feet." He wears a size 14 men's shoe--his nickname is "big foot." He is hungry all the time so he carries a ten-pound lunch box to school. Although the beginning of the year speech in most classrooms includes some reference to "No gum, no food in class" --Peter eats all day long. Teachers smile and look the other way because he's a good-natured, hard working, highly moral student. If they tell him directly not to eat, he won't. But he's got a big appetite.
Perhaps, kids like Peter, will make a difference in the world. By the time he's done growing he'll be looking over the heads of others. And hopefully he'll soar above the consumer culture and set a good example for many.
